History of Sattal Christian Ashram


One of the major founders of the Sattal Christian Ashram was E. Stanley Jones, the missionary and the evangelist. This Christian Ashram is located on a former tea estate, on the shores of Sattal lake. St. John's Church is part and parcel of the ashram and features a mixed colonial art and architecture. Situated close by is also a Sattal Christian Ashram chapel. It was founded in 1930 and introduced Christianity and spread it into the Kumaun hills of Uttarakhand. E. Stanley Jones, a friend of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, Earl Denman, the person who climbed atop Mount Everest all alone, and with Tenzing N. secretly in the year 1947, was in the Ashram and stayed here for many a year.
